Manufacturer Red Flags vs. Green Flags — What to Look for When You're Developing a Product
Jul 29, 2025
Finding a manufacturer as a first-time product creator can feel overwhelming — like online dating with higher stakes (and fewer second chances). You’re excited. You’ve got an idea you believe in. But you're also navigating quotes, MOQs, vague timelines and… sometimes, radio silence.
After developing 1,000+ products across fashion, homewares, eco goods, and skincare — and working with manufacturers from Australia to China to Europe — I’ve seen the best and worst of supplier relationships.
So let’s cut through the noise. Here are 5 red flags to watch out for — and 5 green flags that usually mean you're on the right track.
🚩 5 Manufacturer Red Flags to Avoid
1. “Too good to be true” pricing
If the quote seems suspiciously low, it probably is. That cost saving often comes at the expense of quality, labour standards, or basic accountability. You get what you pay for — and sometimes, much less.
2. Vague MOQs, pricing, or lead times
You ask for clarity, and get half-answers. A reliable supplier will tell you upfront what their minimum order quantity is, how pricing tiers work, and how long sampling or production takes. If they won’t — something’s off.
3. Poor communication
Suppliers who take days to reply (or send confusing, evasive responses) often lead to production headaches later. Good communication isn’t a bonus — it’s the foundation of a good relationship.
4. No photos, certifications, or references
Any legitimate manufacturer should be able to show proof of their facilities, relevant certifications (like GOTS, FSC, ISO), and client references if requested. If they’re cagey about it? Walk away.
5. Pushing you to skip sampling
Sampling exists to protect your product (and your bank account). If a manufacturer encourages you to go straight to production, especially for a first order, it’s a huge red flag.
✅ 5 Manufacturer Green Flags to Look For
1. Prompt, clear responses
You get answers quickly, they speak clearly, and they don’t dodge questions. They make you feel like a priority — not a pest.
2. Willing to provide proof
They send factory images, product samples, and compliance documents without you needing to chase. Transparency isn’t just offered — it’s their standard.
3. Flexible or explainable MOQs
Good suppliers will either accommodate smaller orders while you grow, or take the time to explain why their MOQ is firm. Either way, it shows they’re honest and interested in building a relationship.
4. Sampling is expected and structured
The best suppliers won’t let you not sample. They’ll guide you through the process — because they want the final product to meet your expectations just as much as you do.
5. Collaborative mindset
They ask questions, suggest tweaks, raise concerns. A great manufacturer acts like a development partner — not just a machine for hire.
Final Thoughts:
Good manufacturers don’t just make your product — they make your product journey smoother, more successful, and a whole lot less stressful. Trust your gut, do your due diligence, and remember that you deserve to work with people who value your business — no matter what stage you're at.
